How is the price of bar quoted?
Your enquiry for requirement of different sizes of steel bars (8mm to 40mm diameter) shall also be taken in terms of number of bundle. Please note that the unit of sale & invoicing of steel is by weight, hence bundle (length of rod) ordered is converted to steel weight as per IS standard norms (by multiplying the Kg / meter of each size). A variation of ± 2-3% may exist due to round up.
What do the types/grades of steel signify?
FE 500 grade Steel indicates the yield strength which is also called as the pulling resistance strength of a bar. Hence for FE 500 grade Steel the yield strength is a minimum of 500N/mm2 or 5000 Kgs/Cm2 conforming to the Indian Standard 1786 (IS 1786)
What are the different types of bars available? On what parameter should I choose among different type for my construction?
bars available in different grades as under:
- • FE 415
- • FE 500
- • FE 500D
- • FE 550
- • FE 550D
- • FE 600
FE 500 grade steel is widely used in building construction owing to its strength and higher economic value. Other grade Steel bars are used for commercial and high-rise buildings, as per the design consultant’s recommendation.
What is the length of bar?
The length of a bar is approx. 12 meters or 40 feet.
On what factors should I determine the thickness/diameter of bar that would be appropriate for my construction?
bars are available in different sizes ranging 8mm to 40mm in diameter. Generally, bars ranging from 8mm to 20mm in diameter are used in house/ building construction. The following chart provides the size of reinforcement which must be used according to the use.
No. | Reinforcement cement concrete (RCC) Member | Quantity in kg/m3 | Size of reinforcement required |
1 | Column footings | 75 | 10mm or 12mm |
2 | Grade beams | 100 | 12mm, 16mm – 85% Stirrups – 6mm or 8mm– 15% |
3 | Plinth beams | 125 | 18mm diameter – 85%, Stirrups 6mm – 15% |
4 | Columns | 225 | 16mm, 20mm and 25mm – 90% Ties – 6mm or 8mm – 10% |
5 | Grade beams | 100 | 12mm, 16mm – 85% Stirrups – 6mm or 8mm– 15% |
2 | Lintel beam | 125 | 12mm, 16mm diameter – 85%, Stirrups – 6 mm or 8mm – 15% |
6 | Sunshades | 60 | 8mm diameter – 75%, Distributer – 6mm – 25% |
7 | Canopy slab upto 2.0 m span | 125 | 12mm, 16mm – 85% Stirrups – 6mm or 8mm– 15% |
8 | Staircase waist slab | 150 | 12 or 16mm diameter – 80% Distributor 8mm diameter – 15% |
9 | Roof slab | ||
(a) One way slab | 80 | 8mm diameter – 70% Distributor – 6mm – 30%
(b) Two way slab | 100 | 8mm diameter – 100%
(c) Square slab – 4m to 6m size | 150 | 10 – 12mm diameter – 100%
10 | Main beams above 6m | 250 | 20mm, 16mm, 12mm – 80 – 85%, Stirrups – 8mm – 15 – 20% |
What precautions should I take while buying bars?
The following things must be taken into consideration while buying bars
- • Take a note of the identification, trademarks, logos, mark-grades from the manufacturing firm
- • Check Manufacturer’s test certificate conforming particular grade of steel as per IS 1786
- • Bars should be free from Rust or Ferrous coating and must look new
- • Ends of the each bundle should be of equal length
- • For big projects it is advised to check that only one type/grade of bars is brought to the site and is used in the project after conducting test for each lot. Do not use mixed, 2 or 3 types/grades bars in RCC work at one building
Are there any thumb rules of storing and handling bars at site?
- • The bars must be stored in such a way as to avoid distortion and to prevent deterioration and corrosion
- • Steel bars should not be uneven. They must be free from loose mil scales, dust and loose rust coats of paints, oil or other coatings which may destroy or reduce bond strength
- • Steel bars should not be cleaned by oily substance to remove the rust
- • The bar must be bent correctly and accurately to the size and shape as shown in drawings
- • If possible, it must be ensured that a bar of full length is used
- • Overlapping bars should not touch each other. They should be kept apart with concrete
- • The overlap if given should be staggered
- • The cranks in the bar at the end should be kept in position by using spots
- • The steel bars should not be disturbed while laying cement concrete
- • Required cover under steel bars should be given before laying the cement concrete
- • No overlap should be given in a bar having a diameter of more than 36 mm. If required, the bar should be welded
What precautions should I take while bending and re bending the bars at construction site?
How are bars transported?
steel of specified grade & brand will always be supplied in bundles. An order of 10 Metric Tons will be transported in a LPT Truck (Long Platform Truck) with a capacity of 1109 kgs or any other vehicle with a similar capacity. An order of 2-5 Metric Tons will be made through a Canter.
